Things we take for granted.....on a Mac

The MacBook Pro is one of the few products, I use, that has lived up to all the hype and hoopla. It has it's issues, but at the end of the day, it's a good products (I didn't say reliable, though.) It's only when you use "inferior products" that you realize how good the Mac really is. Here are a features, in a Mac, that I feel we take for granted:

1. Gestures
I just love the track pad and the gestures it supports. The feature is completely original (no wonder Apple has "copyrighted"it) and intuitive. I picked up most of the gestures within hours of starting on my Mac and they've become second nature. I often find myself "gesturing" on other laptops only to realize that they don't support them. Some laptop manufacturers have tried implementing this feature, but they are still way behind Apple.

2. Performance
Well, this is a very subjective topic. The average MacBook Pro is very powerful AND expensive. Equally powerful laptops by other manufacturers are cheaper. But this is like comparing a Rolls Royce Phantom to an equally powerful pick-up truck! Delivering power is something that the others need to learn from Apple. The UI is fluid, interaction is intuitive, and the system rarely hangs. Despite the power, the MacBook Pro does not buck like a bronco!

3. Application Access
Launching applications is so easy! All you need to do is remember the name of the app and launch it though Spotlight. Uninstalling apps is equally easy - just delete it from the Applications folder.

4. File Management
I love Finder. When coupled with Spotlight and Smart Folders, it's a killer feature. MacOS does a great job of managing files. It indexes files very very fast. As a result, when you search for a term using Spotlight, it displays every file that has that term - PDFs, e-mails, presentations, ....AND it categorizes the results.

5. Previewing Files
Preview is such an apt name for the application. Simply double-click a file and preview will open it for you. It does a good job of displaying images and PDF files.

6. Consistency
This is one of the biggest reasons why people stick to their Macs. If you've used one application, you've used them all. The design is so consistent, that picking up a new application is a breeze. Another aspect of this consistency is the ease with which most applications interact with each other. Given that MacOS has always been aimed at creative people, importing and exporting media is a strong point with all apps.

So, for all the Mac users out there, remember - the grass is always greener on the other side! My Mac "black-screened" within weeks of my getting it. Mac support was even worse. They took weeks to fix it and when they did (they had to replace the graphics chip), they didn't fasten the screws properly. Despite the bad start, my MacBook Pro has been a great so far. I don't see myself trading it for another laptop in the near future.
